Understanding Revelation From the Old Testament

Revelation one gives us an introduction or preface to the prophetic word of the Revelation of Jesus Christ.

However, up to this point of most of my Bible studies, and writings, I has made just some brief comments with outlines of how I will personally study this Divine Revelation of Jesus Christ which His Father gave to Him to show unto His servants the things which must shortly come to pass Revelation 1:1. As you begin to study further in this study, it is my purpose to help you find the full and true meaning of the prophetic revelation of the words that are written in the book of Revelation or its Divine and prophetic messages to Israel, to the modern-day church that is living in the last days. Yet it is well for me to state early that I will use various outlines and other examples from time to time to explain what the Spirit of God has revealed about the prophetic word of the book of Revelation. Furthermore, it is well for me to state also that there will be many general references taken from the Old Testament as well as the New Testament.

The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to show unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John: Revelation 1:1

Yet to begin with here in this first text of scripture where that it clearly begins with the fact that the book of Revelation is the “Revelation of Jesus Christ”. As for this pastor I must truly and honestly state that the Spirit of the Living God and His Son revealed unto me that if you are truly walking as a servant, He will reveal that which is hidden things, which God has given unto His Son to show unto His servants. Yes, it was sent and signified by His angel unto His servant John.

Anybody who studies the Bible for any length of time needs to understand truly the authentic authority and the five-fold ministry and its authority which is recorded in Ephesian 4:11 and Revelation 1:1. Moreover, the logic for repeating it is that you and I must fully understand the purpose of authority, as well as how badly this authority is abused by many who have been appointed to authority. Therefore, instead of teaching the saints how to prepare for the return of Christ or equipping the church for the work of ministry. In addition, let me remind you that Paul wrote to the church at Ephesus about the five-fold ministry and the purpose for that five-fold ministry for equipping the saints Ephesians 4:11-13. Even before you get to the book of Revelation the apostles have written many of the warnings about the false prophets, false teachers, and the spirit of antichrist.

For me as well as many other Christians there has always been these questions about the authentic author of the book of Revelation as well as other books of the Bible. Well as we open up this personal study in the first book of Revelation in the first verse you will find a five-fold order of authentic leadership and about who is the author and who is the writer. Jesus Christ is the author and God gave Him the revelation to show to His servants of the events that must shortly come to pass. It was sent and signified by His angel unto His servant John. Note the order of authentic leadership hand down in verse one we all know that God is the supreme authority and He gave the revelation unto His Son to show unto His servants. I make these comments to show the who, what, and how the prophecy of the revelation of Jesus Christ is to unfold by the order of authentic leadership and the given instructions in verse one. Not to be harsh about what I am about to state however, I believe that many Christians for one reason or another miss the whole concept of verse one especially the authentic order is handed down by God. Therefore, I believe that I am safe in saying that those of us who call ourselves servants are to be baring witness of the revelation of Jesus Christ our Lord.

God gave unto him

What God gave unto Jesus is now permission to reveal unto His servants what God told Daniel to close up until the end of time. Furthermore, as a book that would bring assurance to them the saints of the church that had walked strongly in their faith. Yes, to be honest this book of Revelation is full of mysteries, symbolism and within humankind or mankind we are limited to understand this Divine Revelation that God gave to Jesus. Now this book of Revelation and its prophecy began in the Old Testament to the major and minor prophets of the Old Testament.

The point that needs to be stress is that God began revealing what would take place in what I will call a partial disclosures of what He would do before He done it. Then in the New Testament the Lord Jesus Christ in His teaching further that prophecy by teaching that the kingdom of God was at hand. This prophecy was carried on by the apostles to prophecies unto the saints of the church, and now we are in that final disclosures that the church calls the Apocalypse of the book of Revelation.
to show unto his servants

NOTE THESE THOUGHTS: These are the persons or individuals Jesus and God has called, to whom this Divine plan was design and now is made known unto Jesus servants. In addition, they are “servants” the servants of God, by a devout and it is by them in a voluntary surrender of themselves to be the servants of the Lord God. They are not only servants, but they are kings and priests. Taking it a step further one might say it in this manner that these are the distinguished servants God’s holy will is given unto them to reveal unto the saint of the church and the inhabitants of the earth. The secret of the Lord is with them that fear Him; and He will show them His covenant.
things which must shortly come to pass

One of the ways that one could interpret is in the plain that Jesus is revealing unto His servants of the destruction that will take place before the Day of Judgment. However, one might also consider it in this manner that the Revelation of Jesus Christ as the medium of a Divine communication from Almighty God through His Son to be given unto the Son’s servants the thing which must shortly come to pass.
and he sent and signified it by his angel

What I have written up to this point is just a partial understanding that explains the word “revelation” which when understanding the meaning of revelation that it means an unveiling or revealing of things that God told Daniel to close until the end of time Daniel 12:4. Yet one might say that this is one means that could explain the meaning of signified which would show unto us verbally the symbolical language of the symbols as signs of what is written in the book of Revelation.

Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw. (Revelation 1:2)

Who bare record of the word of God

Of who bare record is of the essential and eternal Word of God, and of his only begotten Son; as John the apostle did in his writing of the gospel of John, and in his epistles, and also in this book of Revelation; and which is a clear evidence of his being the writer of the book of Revelation.
Verse two also opens with a very important fact about who is to bear the true witness of the word of God. When we put verse one and two together with authentic order of leadership of the servants then we in like manner are to bare record of what John saw and wrote. I stress this point because of what John saw while he was with Christ and what he saw in the vision of revelation. Therefore, we the church should also bare witness of the authentic testimony recorded in Revelation of Jesus. If you remember in the gospels John was with Christ on the mountain of transfiguration and saw Christ and now John is to continue baring witness of the things he has seen.

Again, up to this point I have written mainly on and introduction or foundation of my personal understand of why I am writing this personal commentary. I will now begin to unpack my understanding of the book of Revelation.

and of the testimony of Jesus Christ

Let us begin by considering that is, that the books of the New Testament; the gospel, and the book of Acts that is the history of the early church, and the epistles, which testifies of the person of Christ, of the truth of His divinity, and reality of His human nature; of the union of the two natures, divine and human, His person: of His several offices, of prophet, priest and King; of what He did and suffered for his people; and of the blessings of grace which they receive by Him.

and of all things that he saw

“and of all things that he saw”: Yes, the apostle John saw with his bodily eyes, what has been recorded in the gospel of Christ, as the human body of Christ, the miracles John witness in it, the transfiguration of it on the mount, the crucifixion of it, and the piercing of it with a spear, and the resurrection of it from the dead; and also the visions recorded in this book; and such a faithful witness serves greatly to confirm the authority of this book of Revelation.
